Participatory driven regional hazard assessment: the Guyana experience
by Oronde Drakes
Drakes described a project he worked on for the national disaster management organization of Guyana, the Civil Defence Commission, where he was responsible for the design and analysis of regional (state) hazard assessments based on input form regional and local government officials as well as indigenous communities. The analysis revealed high levels of physical vulnerability for critical facilities, a knowledge gap for the upper and middle courses of three main rivers as well as general exclusion of indigenous communities from the regional disaster management planning process. The outputs are currently being used by the Civil Defence Commission's operations and training staff in their work at regional and local levels in the two study areas.
